TRASH BAGS, 2018
Mixed Media
Trash Bags is a series of artworks exploring the relationship between humans and the ecosystems of which they are a part. Exploring the notion of the ‘ugly’ through what different cultures deem as pests, specifically ruminating on the idea of a “street animal”. The series reincarnates the grotesque as beautiful and represents revolting as pitiful. Toying with the viewer’s perception this series invites the viewer to reflect on their normativities, and gazes, and how they present in affective behaviors and attitudes. What does it mean to perceive living beings as mere objects to be used and discarded as refuse? On the flip side, how does it feel to perceive trash not as mere objects but as living breathing creatures?
